Costing a line

EstimatorsManagers & admins

Work a line from drawing to price: sheets, markup, one-time costs, quantity breaks and completion.

The costing workspace

Who can:AdminManagerEstimator (assigned lines)

Open a line from the RFQ page, or from My Task. The costing workspace has three parts:

Line navigator
On the left. Every line on the RFQ with its status; move between them without leaving.
Drawing pane
The line's drawing or 3D model, beside the sheets.
Cost sheets
The tabs where you enter costs, with the running price in the summary.

Copy from earlier… appears when another line for the same part already has a saved costing. Pick one and the line's costing is replaced with a copy. Quantities, costs and markup carry over; operation rates and FX are updated to today's values. Save or revert your changes first.

Categories and sheets

The tabs are: Summary, Raw material, Machining, Tooling, Treatment, Assembly, Standard parts, Outsource, Packing, Transportation, MOQ ladder.

Tick a category on the Summary tab to include it in the price. Ticked categories move to the front of the row. New lines start with these ticked:

MECHANICAL
Raw material and Machining.
STANDARD
Standard parts.
ASSEMBLY
Assembly.
  • Each sheet works like a spreadsheet. Pick operation codes, materials and treatments from Master data; their rates fill in for you.
  • The RFQ line's required quantity carries into Raw material as Qty Req. Editing it there updates the line and the lot total. Cost/PC is still the material cost per piece; Qty Req is not multiplied into the unit price.
  • The USED / ALL switch on Raw material shows only the rows you have filled, or every row.
  • Machining is laid out like the CIP sheet: operation codes run across as columns (CM, M, CT and the rest) and you type the cycle time per piece in one row. The rate, markup and price for each code sit underneath, with Cost/PC and Price/PC on the right. USED shows the codes on this line, and Add operation adds another column; ALL shows every code. Clear a code's hours and save to take it off the line.
  • The Fit columns button above each sheet widens or narrows every column to fit its heading and values on one line. Drag a heading's edge to adjust one column.
  • Copy a block from Excel and paste it into a sheet to fill many cells at once.

Standard parts

For bought-in items, enter up to several supplier quotes side by side: currency, unit price, additional cost, MOQ, MOV, lead time and supplier. Choose the one to use as the final price; the others stay on record for comparison.

How the price is worked out

The ticked category sheets give the calculated unit price. Standard-part additional costs are set aside, the rest is multiplied by one plus the markup percentage, then the absolute markup is added, then the standard-part additional costs are added back. That is the unit price after markup. Multiplied by the quantity required and added to the one-time costs and tooling, it gives the lot total.

How the unit price and lot total are worked out.
Markup %
Applied to the calculated unit price first. Standard-part additional costs are never marked up.
Absolute markup
A flat amount added per piece after the percentage markup.
Unit price after markup
Price per piece after the percentage and absolute markup. The lot total multiplies this by Qty Req.
One-time costs
Charged once per lot, not per piece. Added to the lot total, not the unit price.
Tooling
Special tooling for this part. Charged once, like one-time costs.
Lot total
Unit price after markup times the quantity required (the same Qty Req on Raw material), plus one-time costs.

Rates are converted into the RFQ currency at the exchange rate on the day you cost the line. See Master data, FX rates and users.

Quantity breaks (MOQ ladder)

Price tiers by order quantity. One-time costs are spread over each break quantity.

  • New lines start with the default breaks set in Master data, for example 1, 5, 10 and 50.
  • The number of breaks is capped by a system setting (4 unless your administrator changed it).
  • The quotation shows every break, so the customer sees the price at each quantity.

Saving and completing

  • Save costing keeps your work. The line stays open and you can come back to it.
  • Mark complete is available once the line has at least one operation or included cost, every operation code is recognised, and your changes are saved.
  • Reopen costing puts a completed line back to work. It is not allowed while the RFQ is waiting for approval or closed.
  • When every line is complete, the RFQ can be submitted for approval. See Approvals and statuses.

Drawing pane

  • The line's drawing opens beside the sheets. Hold Space and drag to pan.
  • Drag the divider to resize the drawing and the sheets, or collapse the pane for more room.
  • Drop a file on the pane to attach it to the line.
  • To search a PDF, press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) while the pointer is over the drawing, or click the search button. Enter goes to the next match, Shift+Enter the previous one, and Esc closes the search. Scanned drawings have no text to search.

3D viewer

3D models open in the viewer beside the sheets. Open in new window moves it to a second screen. When the viewer is narrow, toolbar buttons that don't fit move into the More menu at the end of the toolbar.

Measure
Pick points, edges or faces to read distance, angle, radius or diameter.
Bounding volume
The smallest box, cylinder or sphere around the part, with machining allowances. Set one allowance for all faces of a block, or open Per face to give each side its own (for example extra on −Z for the vise grip); a round bar takes a radial allowance and one for each end. Optimise spin finds the tightest fit; Copy stock spec copies the stock size and allowances for the raw material sheet.
Cross section
Cut through the model to see inside; place the plane on a picked face.
Views
Standard views, perspective or orthographic, display modes, and Save view as PNG.
Colour
In the Display menu, paint a dark part Light grey, Steel, Aluminium, Brass, White or a custom colour. The viewer remembers it for that model; File colours shows the file's own colours again.
Parts
For assemblies: the part structure, with isolate, zoom to and hide, and the clearance between two parts.

Drag a tool panel by its title bar to move it anywhere over the model; double-click the title bar, or use the pin, to put it back. Panel positions are remembered for every model. Each model also reopens with the tools, settings, hidden parts and view it was left with, in this browser. The model stops as soon as you let go of the mouse, and areas and volumes are shown in the length unit you choose.
